JULIE STANDS UP FOR ANIMAL RIGHTS…
“I can assure you that I would vote against any attempt to repeal the Hunting Bill.
The previous Labour Government had to work extremely hard to get this Bill through the Houses of Parliament because of the resistance of Tory MPs and Peers – we will not give up this piece of legislation without a real fight!
Labour is not only committed to keep the ban on fox-hunting, deer hunting and hare coursing, we are determined to protect animals wherever they are. We believe animals in our food chain need robust welfare standards, domestic animals need stronger protection from cruelty and wild animals need a sustainable ecosystem. Our vision is for the UK to lead the world with high animal welfare standards in the wild, in farming and for domestic animals.
A Labour Government will increase the maximum sentence for those convicted of committing animal cruelty, we will promote cruelty-free animal husbandry and consult on ways to ensure better enforcement of agreed standards.
In addition to this, we will prohibit the third-party sale of puppies, introduce and enforce a total ban on ivory trading and support the ban of wild animals in circuses. We will also stop the badger culls which actually contribute to the spread of bovine TB.
I am delighted that Labour has a real vision on how to protect animals. I do hope you will consider voting for me on 8th June so that together we can stop the Tory Government being able to ride roughshod over public opinion and do as they please to wild animals.“
